The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof Simeon Bamire, has unveiled a mascot for the 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG).
He disclosed that the university is hosting the game and over 200 universities are expected to participate in table tennis, basketball, and athletics.
Speaking at a press conference held at the university on Monday, Bamire assured that plans have been perfected to ensure the safety, and welfare of participants and ensure that the games are hitch-free.
“We have put in place all necessary arrangements to make the stay of all officials, participants, and their handlers worthwhile, particularly in terms of accommodation, security, and medical facility,” Bamire said.
He stated that the sports activities have helped to tackle and reduce restiveness among students and give them opportunities to relax, adding that “it helps the teaching-learning process which is part of what we enjoy here.”
Bamire who appreciated Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for his assistance, noted that the Interior Minister, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has promised to be the special guest of honor for the opening and closing ceremonies.
The President of the West Africa Universities Sports Federation, Shaibu Tanko, stated that the games would further cement the relationship of people in West Africa.
He commended the OAU for hosting the games, saying that the step would resuscitate the association and unify the region.
