A final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oluwole Seun, has reportedly died in an incident suspected to be suicide.
The motive behind the alleged suicide remains unknown, as close friends of the deceased reportedly said they had not observed any unusual behaviour from him before the incident.
The university management confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.
According to Olarewaju, the university received an emergency report at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, concerning an incident at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
He said following the report, the university’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was immediately dispatched to the scene alongside officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
The deceased was subsequently taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

The university management expressed deep concern over the tragedy, saying items and other information recovered from the scene had been handed over to the police, who have commenced a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The institution also said its Student Affairs authorities had been notified to provide necessary welfare support to students affected by the incident.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed his condolences to the family, friends and classmates of the deceased.
Bamire also urged students experiencing emotional distress, academic pressure or personal difficulties to make use of the support structures available within the university.
He said: “No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone.”
The university administration urged members of the university community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while the police investigation continues.
