•Coordinator assures of adequate security
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Niger State has returned to its permanent orientation camp in Paiko, headquarters of Paikoro Local Government Area, after temporarily relocating its orientation exercises to Abuja.
The return follows the rehabilitation and upgrading of infrastructure at the camp by the Niger State Government.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream One corps members at the Paiko Orientation Camp on Friday, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, said the management decided to return to the camp following the state government’s intervention.
She said the rehabilitation had transformed the camp into a more secure and conducive environment for the three-week orientation exercise.
Shuaibu-Ibrahim expressed appreciation to Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago for the prompt intervention, noting that the poor condition of infrastructure had previously posed a major challenge to the NYSC management and necessitated the temporary relocation to Abuja.
According to her, “The infrastructural challenges had threatened our operational readiness, but we thank God that the state Governor, Umaru Mohammed Bago, responded by fast-tracking extensive renovation and upgrading of the camp’s facilities.”
She described the renovated camp as “secure, close to comfortable and conducive,” adding that the intervention had enabled the NYSC to resume operations at the facility under improved conditions.
The coordinator disclosed that about 3,100 corps members are expected to participate in the current exercise, comprising 2,300 deployed to Niger State and 800 posted from the Federal Capital Territory for their orientation in the state.
She commended the Niger State Government for what she described as a major investment in the rehabilitation and transformation of the camp, saying the intervention demonstrated its commitment to youth development and the welfare of corps members.
The three-week orientation exercise features drills, lectures and other activities designed to prepare the corps members for the National Youth Service.
Shuaibu-Ibrahim assured the corps members of adequate security and urged them to comply with camp rules and remain security-conscious throughout the exercise.
She cautioned them against cultism, drug abuse, fake news, hate speech and other activities capable of undermining peace and security in the camp.
She also appealed to security agencies, traditional rulers, local government chairmen and other stakeholders to sustain their support for NYSC programmes and the welfare and security of corps members posted to the state.
