The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Delta State on Friday appealed to the state government to provide an ambulance for the Orientation Camp at Issele-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

The provision of an ambulance for the camp, according to the state coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Also Olusegun, would facilitate the movement of emergency health cases to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Asaba.

Olusegun made the appeal during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members posted to the state.

The NYSC coordinator who thanked the government and people of Delta for their unflinching support to the scheme, stressed that the ambulance has become imperative in view of the growing population of corps members and the proximity to a tertiary healthcare facility.

He also appealed to the government to complete all ongoing projects in the camp.

Olusegun who said the camp opened on July 12, disclosed that as at the time of the ceremony, a total of 1,230 corps members comprising 540 males and 690 females had been registered.

The corps members were sworn in by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Tessy Diai who was represented by Justice Onome Umukoro.

In an interview, Mr. Olusegun further explained the need for the ambulance, saying that during the last camp, no fewer than 46 cases were referred from the camp clinic to FMC.

“The request for ambulance is because of the distance from Issele-Uku to Asaba, and the fact that the ones we have now are old and the cost of maintenance is rising, hence the need for a better equipped one.

“During the last the camp, we had course to move patients to FMC about 46 times. So it tells you the kind of pressure on the vehicle and when you have a large population like this, it is always better to be on the cautious side,” he said.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has promised to continue to assist the scheme to realise it’s core objectives for corps members.

Oborevwori who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Johnson Erijo, made the pledge in his remark during the event.

He told journalists that the ambulance was essential, promising that something would be done about it, and added that the welfare of corps members was of top priority to the state government.
