Super Eagles goalkeeping legend, Idah Peterside has claimed that if Stanley Nwabali joins Kaizer Chiefs, he could earn millions of rands thanks to the club’s financial muscle.
Nwabali is still without a club after parting ways with Chippa United in February by mutual consent.
At the time, it appeared that the player had a clear idea of what the future entailed, but several months have since passed without him securing a move, although he is eligible to do so given his free-agent status.
The shot-stopper has been linked with various clubs, including Wydad Athletic Club, Simba SC, and Kaizer Chiefs, but nothing concrete has yet materialised.
Idah Peterside, a former Nigerian goalkeeper who also played in the PSL in the early 2000s, believes that Nwabali could be set for a massive payday should he join Amakhosi.
He told SportsBoom: “I’m aware of the Kaizer Chiefs interest, so if he signs a contract with Kaizer Chiefs, which I’m hearing he might, it’s unbelievable,” the former Tembisa Classic goalie said.
“And you know, sometimes when we say these South African teams, you’ll be shocked at how much Nwabali will earn. You will be absolutely shocked at what South African clubs pay.
Peterside, who is also one of the ‘Wisemen’ on football talkshow Soccer Africa, described Kaizer Chiefs as one of the big three teams in South Africa alongside Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
“Any of these can comfortably look after you. It’s not just about playing football, my brother; it’s about your future and being comfortable.”
“Let me give this in a nutshell: a South African club can comfortably pay you $50,000 (approximately R822,000) a month without sweating.
“So if he goes to Kaizer Chiefs, trust me, he will earn $100,000 (approximately R1.6 million).
The former Nigerian keeper who is fondly known as ‘pastor’ said a footballer wouldn’t want to go ply his trade in Greece where they might get paid around $6,000 or $7,000 (approximately R98,000 or R115,000) while one of the big three Mzansi clubs would pay a footballer $50,000 (approximately R822,000).
“You just go to South Africa and play! The issue is that you are constantly playing as a goalkeeper.”
