The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has dissolved its Edo State Executive Committee and imposed an indefinite suspension on all union activities in the state over what it described as a deliberate violation of directives from the union’s national leadership.

The decision was contained in a letter by the union’s General Secretary, Ali Baba, following the meeting of the National Administrative Council (NAC) on Saturday, July 18.

According to the letter, the NAC reviewed the conduct of the Edo State leadership after a seminar tagged “Secretaries Forum Workshop Edo State 2026,” in Benin City on Thursday, July 16.

The council accused the Edo State Chairman, Decency Ochie and members of the State Executive Committee of inviting and officially recognising an individual claiming to be the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, despite an existing directive from the national secretariat recognising only the NLC caretaker committee in the state.

The national leadership described the action as an act of insubordination, alleging that it amounted to a disregard for directives from the National Secretariat and conduct capable of bringing the union into disrepute.

“The action constitutes a clear act of insubordination, disregard for the directives of the National Leadership, and conduct capable of bringing the name and reputation of the Union into disrepute,” the letter stated.

Following its deliberations, the NAC announced the immediate dissolution of the Edo State Executive Committee and the indefinite suspension of all union activities in Edo State until further notice.

The council further directed that no member of the dissolved executive should represent or act on behalf of the union in any capacity pending further directives from the National Secretariat.

Copies of the decision were forwarded to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the President of NUTGTWN, and the NLC Caretaker Committee in Edo State for their information and necessary action.

Reaffirming its commitment to discipline and unity, the union said it would not tolerate actions capable of undermining the decisions of its leadership or damaging its reputation as an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
