The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahaya, says the just-concluded National Media Summit in Taraba State represents a fulfilled campaign commitment and a major step toward his administration’s long-term agenda to reposition the journalism profession.

The summit, which brought together delegates from the 36 states and the FCT, focused on building trust and integrity in the age of misinformation as well as welfare and digital transformation in the media.

In an interview with Daily Sun, Yahaya recalled that during his campaign for the Union’s top office, he pledged to introduce fresh ideas, convene broader professional engagements, and push reforms aimed at unifying and strengthening the industry.

According to him, organising the Taraba summit was a deliberate move to translate those promises into action. He said the gathering allowed journalists to collectively examine the state of the profession, interrogate emerging threats, and chart a strategic pathway for rebuilding credibility and operational capacity.

The NUJ president identified welfare reform, statutory protection, and professional rejuvenation as core elements of his reform agenda. He reaffirmed plans to present a Media Enhancement Bill before the National Assembly to address structural gaps affecting remuneration, insurance, and overall safety. Yahaya insisted that delivering improved working conditions and raising ethical standards remain non-negotiable pillars of his leadership.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Taraba State Government in hosting the summit, noting that the improved security environment in the state was a key factor in selecting Jalingo as the venue. Yahaya said the successful execution of the summit has strengthened his administration’s mandate to pursue long-term reforms capable of restoring public confidence in journalism and reinforcing the profession’s role in national development.

According to him, with the summit now completed, his focus will shift to implementing the resolutions and feedback generated from Taraba, consolidating partnerships, and driving policy interventions that reflect the promises he made to journalists across Nigeria.
