The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for the adoption of clear, technology-based systems in the management of election results, stressing that such reforms were essential to strengthening public confidence in the nation’s democratic process.
In a statement by its National President, Alhassan Yahya, the Union said it had been closely monitoring recent legislative discussions on electoral reforms, particularly proposals concerning the handling and transmission of results from polling units.
It expressed concern that any ambiguity in electoral procedures could undermine trust in the system and create unnecessary tension in the polity.
“As a professional body committed to democratic development, accountability and public confidence in governance, the NUJ believes that clarity in electoral procedures is fundamental to national stability,” the statement noted.
According to the Union, Nigerians have consistently demanded electoral reforms that guarantee openness, transparency and verifiability. It observed that modern democracies around the world are increasingly deploying digital tools to safeguard the integrity of elections and ensure that outcomes truly reflect the will of voters.
It maintained that the prompt relay of polling unit results through technology-driven platforms would reduce suspicion, limit disputes and enhance credibility in the electoral process.

“A process that is clear, consistent and technologically supported strengthens institutional credibility and reinforces democratic culture,” it stated.
With preparations already underway for the 2027 general elections, the Union urged lawmakers to prioritise legislative measures that would inspire confidence among voters.
It called for the institutionalisation of enforceable guidelines that guarantee real-time transmission of election results, describing this as critical to the conduct of credible and peaceful polls.
“Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve, and reforms must reflect global best practices while responding to the aspirations of our people,” the NUJ said.
The Union further appealed to all stakeholders in the electoral process to act in the national interest and support reforms that promote transparency, accountability and public trust.
“Strengthening the framework for the management of election results will contribute meaningfully to political stability and deepen citizens’ faith in democratic governance,” the statement concluded.
