…Hails NLC scribe’s legacy of labour advocacy
The managing director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, has expressed sadness over the death of the General Secretary of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Emmanuel Ugboaja, describing his passing as a major loss to Nigeria’s labour movement.
Faleye, in a condolence message issued in Abuja at the weekend, said Ugboaja distinguished himself as a committed labour leader who stood firmly for the rights, dignity and welfare of Nigerian workers.
The NSITF boss described the late NLC scribe as an articulate advocate, patriot and dedicated public servant who served the labour movement with courage, dignity and passion.
According to Faleye, Ugboaja’s contributions went beyond his responsibilities as General Secretary of the NLC, as he played an important role in advancing workers’ welfare, social justice and protection.
“As the General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja stood firm for the rights and dignity of labour,” Faleye said, describing the deceased as “a bridge-builder, a voice of reason, and a dependable partner in the pursuit of protection for all workers.”
The NSITF managing director said Ugboaja’s commitment to the Nigerian worker and his engagement with stakeholders made him an important voice in the country’s labour relations and social protection space.
Faleye also paid tribute to Ugboaja’s professional accomplishments, describing him as “a brilliant lawyer and an astute administrator” whose contributions to the advancement of workers’ welfare and social justice would be deeply missed.
He said the late labour leader left behind a legacy defined by service, courage and an unwavering commitment to the Nigerian worker, adding that his advocacy and integrity would continue to inspire those working for better conditions for workers.

“While celebrating his life of service, courage, and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian worker, we recognise that his legacy of advocacy and integrity will endure,” Faleye said.
The NSITF chief extended the Fund’s condolences to the leadership of the NLC, led by its President, Joe Ajaero, as well as Ugboaja’s immediate family, colleagues and the wider labour movement.
“On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of NSITF, we commiserate with the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero and his team, the family he has left behind, and the entire labour movement,” Faleye said.
He noted that Ugboaja’s death came as a painful loss to those who worked with him and to the broader movement committed to protecting workers’ rights and advancing social justice in Nigeria.
Faleye said the late NLC General Secretary would be remembered not only for the position he occupied but also for the principles he upheld and the impact he made in the course of his service to Nigerian workers.
He prayed for strength and comfort for Ugboaja’s family, the NLC leadership, his colleagues and the entire labour movement as they mourned the loss of one of their prominent voices.
“May the Almighty grant his soul eternal rest, and grant the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” Faleye added.
