As part of efforts to build capacity for its expanded mandate to investigate train accidents, Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) recently entered into alliance with United Kingdom’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch.
The collaboration is aimed at bridging the institutional gap that may arise following the addition of train accident investigation as part of its mandate.
It also underscores the Bureau’s proactive approach to institutional growth to building and commitment to building a data driven, resilient transport safety investigation system.
To reinforce the agreement, Director General of the Bureau Alex Badeh led a high level delegation to Derby, United Kingdom’s ngdom, the operational headquarters of the Branch.

He explained further that the visit provided a valuable platform for direct institutional engagement, structured knowledge exchange and strengthened collaboration between both organisations.
According to him, the programme of visit featured detailed peer reviews and technical exchanges across key operational areas ranging from quality systems, to digital information management frameworks and investigator competency development.
The DG noted that the delegation gained first hand exposure to operational procedures, enabling them to benchmark global best practices and study proven investigative methodologies.
He said that these insights are expected to support ongoing development of Nigeria’s rail transport ecosystem, enhancing safety oversight, investigative efficiency and regulatory alignment.
