….emphasizes the need for responsible waste disposal and a healthy environment

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

The Nasarawa State Government has called upon residents to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in their communities, stressing the importance of preventing flooding and maintaining a healthy environment.

This appeal was made yesterday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Garba Muhammad Rosha, during the commemoration of this year’s National Sanitation Day.

The event, which took place at the Yahaya Sabo Bus Terminal in Bukan Sidi, Lafia, saw a gathering of government officials, community leaders, and concerned citizens. The aim was to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of improper waste disposal and to encourage responsible practices among the residents.

In his address, Permanent Secretary Garba Muhammad Rosha highlighted the significance of maintaining cleanliness in order to prevent flooding and safeguard public health. He emphasized that indiscriminate dumping of refuse not only poses a threat to the environment but also contributes to the blockage of drainages, leading to the risk of severe flooding during the rainy season.

“Keeping our communities clean is not just a responsibility of the government; it is the duty of every citizen,” stated Rosha. “By refraining from indiscriminate dumping and adopting responsible waste disposal practices, we can mitigate the risk of flooding and create a healthy environment for ourselves and future generations.”

sun reports that the National Sanitation Day serves as a timely reminder for residents to prioritize cleanliness and adopt sustainable waste management practices. It encourages individuals to properly dispose of waste in designated areas such as waste bins and recycling centers, as well as promoting initiatives like waste segregation and composting.

During the event, government representatives also distributed educational materials, such as brochures and pamphlets, to raise awareness about the importance of sanitation and waste management. They highlighted the negative consequences of improper waste disposal, including the spread of diseases, environmental degradation, and the overall degradation of the quality of life for residents.

Furthermore, the Permanent Secretary urged residents to actively participate in community cleanup exercises and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings on a daily basis. He called upon community leaders to spearhead campaigns that promote the sustainable management of waste and discourage indiscriminate dumping.
