Nigeria is witnessing a fresh wave of investment in sports infrastructure, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) crediting states and the Federal Government for a coordinated push to rebuild stadiums, pitches and community facilities nationwide.
Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the developments signal a new era for sports in the country, pointing to recent progress in Kaduna, Bayelsa, Delta, and Ogun states as proof of the momentum building across Nigeria.
Olopade singled out the transformation of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, which was concessioned to the state government, describing the work being done there as “gobsmacking” and “amazing.” He also praised ongoing efforts in Bayelsa State under Governor Douye Diri and commended Delta State’s contribution to the infrastructure drive.
On the NSC’s own initiatives, Olopade said the commission has awarded contracts covering national stadiums, university campuses and neighbourhood facilities. “In the next few weeks, everywhere will be busy,” he said.

In Ogun State, the NSC has commissioned a training pitch at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta to complement existing facilities, while rehabilitation work has begun at the historic Muda Lawal Stadium to upgrade it into a modern venue. “Work has commenced on revamping the old Muda Lawal Stadium to bring it back to a 21st-century stadium,” Olopade said.
He stressed that the infrastructure push extends beyond hosting competitions, calling modern facilities vital for athlete development, community engagement, youth empowerment and job creation. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support of the sports sector, saying it has allowed the NSC to generate employment for thousands of young Nigerians.
Olopade expressed confidence that the ongoing projects would reposition sports infrastructure as a driver of sporting excellence, youth development and economic growth nationwide.
