The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced digital birth and death registration across Osun State under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system.
The NPC Federal Commissioner in Osun State, Dr Amidu Tadese, disclosed this during a press briefing in Osogbo yesterday, urging residents to support the commission to ensure the initiative’s success.
Recalling that President Bola Tinubu launched the E-CRVS and inaugurated the National Coordination Committee on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics on November 8, 2023, Tadese stated that the VitalReg platform became fully operational across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, including Osun State, effective July 1, 2026.
He explained that the introduction of the platform reflects the NPC’s unwavering commitment to improving service delivery through innovation and technology.
“The platform has been designed to provide a secure, efficient, and accessible digital system for the registration of births, deaths, and other vital events, while ensuring the integrity and reliability of our national database,” Tadese said.
According to him, despite progress made over the years, Nigeria continues to face significant challenges in civil registration. He noted that although the country records an estimated five million births annually, a large number of births and deaths remain unregistered.
“Nationally, birth registration coverage stands at approximately 57 percent, while death registration remains below 20 percent. These gaps continue to deny many Nigerians their legal identity and undermine the availability of accurate statistics required for effective national development.
“It is therefore imperative that all stakeholders intensify efforts to ensure that every birth, every death, and every other registrable vital event is promptly registered,” Tadese stated.

He noted that the VitalReg platform provides both assisted and self-service options, saying: “This enables citizens to access registration services online at any time or visit any NPC registration centre for help.
“The platform offers faster processing, digital certificate issuance, improved data accuracy, enhanced security, and greater convenience for members of the public,” he added.
To strengthen service delivery, he said the commission has formed strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and Banksforte Technologies Limited.
These collaborations, according to him, aim to decentralise services, improve grassroots accessibility, promote community participation, and enhance data accuracy.
Tadese called on the Osun State Government, local government councils, traditional and religious leaders, healthcare institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, community leaders, and the media to support the drive for universal civil registration in the state.
“I also urge parents and guardians to ensure that every child is registered immediately after birth and to promptly report all deaths and other vital events at the nearest NPC registration centre or through the VitalReg platform,” he said.
Earlier, the Osun State Director of the NPC, Ajayi Oluwaseun, appealed to stakeholders and the media to support the commission by sensitising and educating the public on the importance of using the new digital platform.
