As part of activities to mark its 30th anniversary, Nigeria’s pioneer maritime/ aviation newspaper, PortNews, will recognise and honour personalities and corporate organizations that have played significant roles in the shipping and aviation developments in Nigeria.

The event, which holds at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos on Thursday, November 6, will witness awards being presented to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) among others for their nation building efforts over the past decades.

According to the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of PortNews, Mr. Wale Oni, NPA’s endeavours in shipping and property investments in Nigeria and overseas predate the nation’s independence in 1960.

“In fact, Nigeria was weaned and nurtured to nationhood on the wealth generated from wharf trading activities in the Niger Delta, Calabar and Lagos seaside by colonial establishments like Royal Niger Companies, Elder Dempster, Portuguese traders, indigenous traders, farmers and fishermen.

“This has evolved over time into what is now known as the Nigerian Ports Authority. Today, NPA is not only one of the most reliable and top revenue generating organizations for the Nigerian government; it’s also a large employer of labour. For this historic feat, NPA will be honoured with the Port Legend Award,” he said.

Flour Mills of Nigeria will also get the Port Legend Award. The company holds a ubiquitous presence in Nigeria and West Africa. For close to 70 years, its biggest brand, Golden Penny Flour, is inevitable in the menu of every Nigerian household. Flour Mills has also played pioneering and foremost roles in shipping development in Nigeria, thus giving skills and jobs to generations of Nigerians over the past years.

For ensuring that Nigeria’s airspace is safe and accident free, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will equally be recognized and honoured with an award.

Notable personalities including Captain Emmanuel lhenacho, Otunba Oyewole Fashawe, Dr Taiwo Afolabi, Olori Vicky Haastrup, Prince Shittu Olayiwola, Dennis Okafor, and Dr Boniface Aniebonam will be honoured for their incomparable contributions to the growth of the industry.

A major highlight of the ceremony is the anniversary lecture titled “Nigeria’s Shipping Carriage Gaps, CVFF and the Fading Manpower” to be delivered by Captain Ladi Olubowale, President of African Ship Owners Association (ASA). He will drop hints on how the CVFF’s accumulated revenues running into several millions of dollars, idling away in NIMASA’s fault, can be exploited to re-launch Nigeria back to the committee of respected maritime nations.
