•As 36 die in terror attacks in Adamawa, Sokoto
From Adesuwa Tsan, Abuja
The Northern Senators Forum (NSF) has urged the Federal Government and state governments to urgently move ahead with the establishment of State Police, following fresh terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of over 36 Nigerians in Adamawa and Sokoto states.
Chairman of the Forum, Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, in a statement, called on the Presidential Working Group on State Police, state governors and Houses of Assembly to expedite action on the State Police Bill currently awaiting ratification. The call came against the backdrop of attacks on Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State and Ungushi village in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where security personnel and civilians, including worshippers, were killed.

The senators argued that the increasing security challenges across the country had made decentralised policing an urgent necessity, particularly for improving intelligence gathering and response to threats at the grassroots. “The Northern Senators Forum strongly condemns the recent wave of terrorist attacks in Gaya community, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State and in Ungushi village, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, which have claimed the lives of over 36 Nigerians, including security personnel and innocent worshippers.”
“Decentralised policing is critical to improving response time and intelligence gathering at the grassroots. We cannot continue to lose innocent lives to insurgents while bureaucracy delays critical security reforms. The time to act is now,” they said. The Forum condemned the attacks and commiserated with the families of the victims, while praying for the recovery of those injured.
It also urged state and local governments to strengthen community vigilante groups and position them as effective intelligence partners to the police and military in the fight against terrorism and other forms of insecurity.
