The Congress of Northern Democrats (CND) has expressed concern over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s continued presidential ambitions, saying it could affect opposition cohesion and political renewal in Nigeria.
The group said it believes the opposition should focus more on building unity and presenting solutions to the country’s economic and security challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Musa Adamu, the CND reacted to reports suggesting Atiku may contest the presidency again in 2027.
According to the statement, Nigerians are currently facing serious economic and social difficulties, including insecurity, inflation, unemployment and rising hardship, which require opposition leaders to prioritise collective national interests.
Adamu said: “At a time when millions of Nigerians are dealing with hunger, insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship, the opposition ought to focus on presenting a coherent national rescue agenda.
“Many Nigerians are concerned that political ambitions and internal calculations within the opposition continue to overshadow the urgent need for unity and effective leadership.”

The group noted that Atiku has remained active in presidential politics for decades and questioned whether the opposition should begin creating more opportunities for younger leaders and fresh perspectives.
“The North, in particular, must reflect on the direction of its politics and whether the time has come to encourage generational transition and broader inclusion within the opposition,” the statement added.
The CND also said recurring disagreements within opposition parties have weakened public confidence and reduced the ability of opposition platforms to effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
While acknowledging Atiku’s longstanding role in Nigerian politics, the group argued that opposition leaders should place greater emphasis on consensus-building and strengthening democratic institutions.
“It is important for experienced politicians to support the emergence of younger Nigerians with fresh ideas, energy and grassroots appeal,” Adamu said.
The group further called on Northern youths, civil society organisations and political stakeholders to support issue-based politics focused on competence, integrity and national development.
“The North and Nigeria deserve leadership focused on practical solutions and inclusive progress,” the statement concluded.
