From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
The Northern Elders Political Development Group (NEPG) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister of State for Defence Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle for rescuing 24 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, alive and unharmed.
National Coordinator of the group, Malam Yusuf Abubakar, made the position of the group known while reading their communiqué issued after their meeting before newsmen in Birnin Kebbi.
In the seven-point communiqué, the group appealed to Northern leaders, especially the state governors, to create synergy on how to tackle insecurity and poverty instead of engaging in acrimony and politicising security issues.
Abubakar, who was also the Chairman of the 2025 Kebbi sitting of the group, said that it was high time leaders in the region found a lasting solution to the insecurity bedevilling the Northern states.
According to him: “Zamfara State Governor should concentrate on how to fight insecurity and poverty ravaging the people of his state rather than embarking on a campaign of calumny calling for removal of Defence Minister Bello Matawalle.”

“Now is time that the DSS should invite Senator Kabiru Marafa on his outbursts and his desire for invasion of this country by the US, which he did out of sheer unpatriotic stance. He needs to go for a psychiatrist diagnosis to check his mental well-being. This could be partly due to his failure to secure political appointment.”
“We also urge the immigration department to hastily cease his passport so as to prevent him from meeting people of his ilk who are willing to plunge this country into jeopardy. We called on security agents to investigate some politicians in Zamfara, Katsina and other places where media outlets are being stuffed with fake news to create tension and instability among populace through mischief, lies and propaganda against particular individuals.”
“We commend and endorse the Federal Government efforts, for its relentless commitment in fighting insecurity particularly Operation Fansan Yamma; and the numerous strategies being carried out by State Minister of Defence Bello Matawalle and that of NSA Nuhu Ribadu along with our gallant security operatives in order to safeguard and secure this country.”
The group, however, appealed to the traditional rulers in the Northern states and religious leaders to fine-tune how to unite the people and evolve ways to instil discipline into the youth, particularly in creating a remedy for the abuse of social media and others.
