Nollywood actor, Jide Awobona, has criticised colleagues in the film industry who use social media to ridicule fellow actors, spread unverified stories, and deliberately damage their reputations.

The Ikunle movie producer expressed concern over what he described as a growing culture of public mockery and malicious gossip among some actors, saying such behaviour undermines the values of the creative community.

The actor said he finds it disappointing that individuals who understand the demands and emotional toll of the profession would choose to attack their colleagues publicly rather than support them.

“I’m always amazed when people who call themselves actors jump into comment sections to shade or mock other actors,” he said.

“It’s bad enough that some of them gossip and even fabricate stories when they don’t have the facts, all in an attempt to tarnish someone’s image out of envy or spite. Some even go so far as to send these stories to blogs, hoping to damage another person’s reputation. But having the confidence to join the trolling publicly? That’s the part I find most disturbing.”

Awobona further stressed that creatives should be more mindful of the sacrifices, emotional investment, and mental health challenges associated with the entertainment industry, urging actors to foster a culture of respect and solidarity.

“As creatives, we should understand the work, sacrifice, emotions, and mental health this profession demands. If your contribution is constantly tearing down your colleagues, then you’re not acting like a creative; you’re behaving like an audience member, a fan, a hater, or a troll,” he added.
