Nollywood actor and filmmaker Uzee Usman has spoken about the role of realistic storytelling in promoting peace and improving understanding among people.
Usman made the remarks while addressing film students at the Toronto Film School, where he discussed filmmaking, storytelling and his experience in Nigeria’s movie industry.
“I love telling realistic stories,” he told the students, stressing the importance of authenticity and creating films that audiences can relate to.
The actor also spoke about his ambition to encourage collaboration between Nollywood and Hollywood, saying he wanted Nigerian stories to reach international audiences.
“I want Nigerian stories to travel, but I also want our filmmakers to collaborate with the world,” he said.

Usman, who has featured in and produced more than 40 films, played Scourge in Netflix’s The Covenant, a role that brought him wider international visibility.
He has also used his filmmaking work to promote peace and understanding, particularly in Northern Nigeria and other parts of the country.
Peace can be advocated through storytelling. When people understand each other’s stories, they begin to understand each other,” he said.
His engagement with students at the Toronto Film School comes amid growing international interest in Nigerian films and filmmakers.
Usman’s recent activities have also drawn attention to the potential for cross-border collaborations between Nigerian and international filmmakers.
