The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced the death of Mrs. Omotola Adekuoroye, the mother of Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Oduanyo Adekuoroye.
Mrs. Adekuoroye, aged 71, passed away on October 7, 2023, and will be laid to rest in Akure, Ondo State on December 9, 2023.
As news of Mrs. Adekuoroye’s passing spread, messages of condolence and support have poured in from the sporting community and well-wishers both locally and internationally.
A statement by the NOC spokesman, Tony Nezianya notes that the President of the Committee, Engr Habu Ahmed Gumel, expressed his heartfelt sympathies and regrets that he cannot personally attend the funeral due to prior engagements.
However, Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the Movement in Akure, will represent Gumel.
The late Mrs. Adekuoroye was a beloved mother and is survived by her daughter, Oduanyo, who has brought immense pride to Nigeria through her outstanding achievements in the Commonwealth Games and other Games, including the World Wrestling Champions. She is currently Nigeria’s medal hope at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
The NOC feels obliged to rally around the top wrestler who carries the hopes and aspirations of two hundred million Nigerians to the Paris Games.
Adekuoroye first won Gold at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, a feat she repeated at the Games of ‘2018 Gold Coast, Australia, and the 2022 Birmingham winning Gold in medals African Games.
