Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has hailed Argentina captain Lionel Messi, insisting that no player performed better than the legendary forward during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Yamal made the remark while expressing gratitude to Messi for reaching out to him after what he described as a difficult night.
In a message shared on Facebook on Tuesday, the Spanish international thanked the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner for checking on him and offering support.
“No player was better than Messi in the 2026 FIFA World Cup!” Yamal wrote.
He also expressed appreciation for Messi’s gesture, saying he was grateful that the Argentine superstar had called to find out how he was doing.
The Barcelona youngster’s comments came after he finished third in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings, behind England captain Harry Kane, who won the award, and France forward Kylian Mbappé, who finished second.
Although Yamal did not explicitly link Messi’s call to the Ballon d’Or outcome, his message highlighted the respect and admiration he holds for the former Barcelona captain.
Messi, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, remains an influential figure for younger generations, including Yamal, who has emerged as one of Barcelona and Spain’s leading talents.
