A train operating on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor derailed on Monday, raising fresh concerns about rail safety, though authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded in the incident. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) said it has commenced a probe to determine the cause of the derailment and assess possible safety lapses, even as railway officials assured passengers and the public that emergency response protocols were promptly activated.

The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) that confirmed the incident, said it occurred at about 10:30 am near Asham, on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor. It involved a rear locomotive and a passenger coach.

The NRC in a press statement confirmed that preliminary reports indicated that the rear locomotive made contact with the rear immediately next to it (rear) due to a coupling issue.

Some passengers sustained injuries and were promptly taken to a nearby medical facility for proper attention.

It said that emergency response protocols were immediately activated, just as relevant technical teams have been mobilised to the location.

The NRC statement also indicated that the Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) is on site to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident in line with established safety procedures.

The train arrived at Idu station at about 10:39 a.m, 38 minutes behind schedule, due to the time allowed to remove the incident rear locomotive and coach Sp 0006.

The Corporation assured the public that safety remains its top priority, and all necessary measures are being taken to address the situation and ensure the continued safe operation of train services.

It said further details will be communicated as more information becomes available.
