Olufemi Ajadi, a chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Ajadi acknowledged the significant progress made towards gender equality, while also emphasizing the need for continued efforts to achieve a society where women have equal access to education, economic opportunities, and healthcare.
Ajadi reiterated the NNPP’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women to take on leadership roles.
He said: “Myself and NNPP believe that women’s participation in politics and decision-making processes is crucial for building a more just and equitable society. That is one of the reasons I chose a woman as my vice during the 2023 governorship election. I believe that women have a lot to offer and must be given the chance to contribute their knowledge in all sector and especially in our political space.”
Ajadi also urged women, especially in Nigeria, to participate more in politics.
He said: “I use the opportunity to call on Nigerian women to participate more in politics. Let’s take the senate for instance, out of 109 senators, only 4 women are there. We need more women to show courage and step forward to take political positions in Nigeria.”
The NNPP chieftain, however, celebrated the achievements of women like Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Tobi Amusan, Assisat Oshoala, and many others who have paved the way for future generations, honoring their courage, resilience, and determination.
He also acknowledged the countless women who work tirelessly in their communities, making a positive impact on the lives of those around them.
Ajadi issued a call to action, urging everyone to work together to create a society where women and girls have equal opportunities to thrive.
“Let us challenge discriminatory practices and promote gender equality in all aspects of life,” he stated.
The celebration of International Women’s Day is a testament to the global recognition of the importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
