The factional chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, has dismissed the resignation of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as a mere formality, insisting it holds no real political significance for the party.
Major said Kwankwaso had effectively “ceased to be a member of the NNPP” following his expulsion in 2023 over alleged anti-party activities, stressing that the recent resignation letter was only directed at the Kwankwasiyya group.
“The NNPP had already felt the impact of Kwankwaso’s exit when the Memorandum of Understanding with the Kwankwasiyya group was terminated in 2023,” he said.
He maintained that while Kwankwaso contributed to the party’s growth, no political structure should revolve around an individual, noting that the NNPP is now focused on consolidating its structures and strengthening internal systems ahead of future elections.

Describing the resignation as a “face-saving measure,” Major said the party has drawn lessons from the crisis and is committed to rebuilding as a policy-driven platform.
However, in a letter dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso cited the evolving political landscape and the need for strategic realignment as reasons for his decision.
He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the party’s National Leader and presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, thanking party leaders and members for their support.
Kwankwaso also assured that his resignation does not mark the end of his commitment to Nigeria’s development.
Meanwhile, his faction is expected to respond after a National Executive Committee meeting, amid growing speculation that he may align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of future presidential ambitions.
