Nnewi indigenes resident in Atlanta, Georgia, United States have intervened to pay the hospital bills of some patients at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, to the tune of N2.5 million.
The leader of the team, Mrs. Grace Okeke, said the gesture was the fourth in the series of interventions in healthcare matters from Nnewi Union in the USA.
Mrs Okeke disclosed that this year’s edition extended to Nnewi non-indigenes and also included patients from other departments of the hospital other than those in the maternal and child section.
She said: “This is an annual event by the Nnewi uUnion in Atlanta. They call it Awaiting Bill Settlement (ABS). At Christmas when Christians all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Nnewi indigenes in Atlanta said that these indigent patients should also celebrate the birth of Christ at their homes like others.
She said that the donors had in the past during the CVID-19 lockdown made provisions for some Nnewi residents including cash distributed within the four quarters of Nnewi to cushion the effect of the lockdown in 2020.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the NAUTH, Professor Joseph Ugboaja, expressed gratitude to the team for the “culture of think-home-philosophy.”
