As Anambra State government has set aside September 30, 2022 as a deadline to stop street refuse dumping, President-General of Nzuko-Ora Nnewi, Dr Maduka Atuenyi, has warned residents to desist forthwith from dumping garbage on the streets.
Waste management, like in some other parts of Anambra State, has become a nagging issue in Nnewi leading to indiscriminate refuse disposal at every corner of the town.
However, the Nnewi PG warned that any further acts of refuse disposal at unauthorized spots in the industrial community would not be condoned.
He directed residents from the four quarters of Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewichi communities that make up Nnewi to dispose of their garbage at Ugwuapkatiozu, the designated dumpsite, no matter how distant it could be from one’s residence.
“Governor Charles Soludo has good intentions on the way he wants to manage the waste in Anambra State. But you have to know that the beginning of anything is always difficult.
“It won’t be that easy. We as Nzuko-Ora Nnewi advise people to cooperate with the governor. I know that people will smile at the end of the day. I know our governor has a very good waste management plan as people are sent to the streets to collect garbage, using bell to call out people to submit their refuse to the collectors moving from street to street.
“Can you imagine people dumping those things at the major roads, it’s unacceptable. Everybody should go to the designated dumpsite for now,” he said.
Dr Atuenyi warned those who he said molested residents disposing of their garbage at the current dumpsite to desist from doing so or face the consequences.
