Imo State Goverenor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has assured the people of Ngor Okpala that the state government would fully participate in the funeral of the late statesman, Dr Basil Nnanna Ukegbu, who will be buried on December 30, 2025 at Amafor, Imerienwe, Imo State.

Governor Uzodimma, who is the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, gave the assurance in his condolence remarks to the delegation of the community and family, who visited the Government House, to formally inform him about the progress made towards the burial of the late statesman.

While highlighting the “lofty and statesmanly contributions of Ukegbu in the choice of Owerri as the capital of old Imo State,” Uzodimma eulogised him for “his politics of principle and enviable demonstration of will and courage.”

He also praised him as a foremost educationist and patriot. Governor Uzodimma promised to mobilize a suitable contractor to make the road leading to Ukegbu’s ancestral home in Amafor Imerienwe, Ngor Okpala motorable.

Noting that Ukegbu was a foremost Parliamentarian in the First Republic, the governor promised to formally inform the National Assembly of the passing and burial of the late statesman.

Ukegbu, in the heat of the despotic rule of late General Sani Abacha held public protests against the regime and narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in his country home.

Following the demise of Abacha, Ukegbu joined Dr Alex Ekwueme and other notable patriots to form the G-34, and after the return of democratic governance in 1999, he refrained from joining any party and retired from active politics, electing to play the role of a non-partisan statesman.
