NLC Shuts Down IBEDC, NERC in Oyo, Demands Suspension of Electricity Tariff Hike

By Oluseye Ojo

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Oyo State on Monday shut down the operations of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in protest against the recent increase in electricity tariffs.

Led by state chairman Mr Kayode Martins, the union members took over the offices of both organizations across Ibadan and its environs, forcing staff to vacate the premises. This action was taken in response to the rising cost of living and the hardship faced by Nigerians due to the tariff increase.

The NLC argued that the tariff hike is unacceptable and further burdens citizens already struggling with high prices of essential goods and services. They demanded the immediate suspension of the increase and called on the government to address the grievances of the people.

Martins emphasized the need for the government to ease the burden on Nigerians and create a more favourable environment for the common man. He highlighted the difficulties faced by citizens due to the removal of subsidies on essential commodities and services.

The shutdown of IBEDC and NERC offices caused inconvenience to customers who were unable to receive assistance. The NLC’s action is a bold step to pressure the government to reconsider its decision and provide relief to the people.
