The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) management has reacted to a 14-day ultimatum issued by the Agency-based unions, expressing surprise that the union’s letter was leaked to the media on the same day it was received.
The management noted that the issues raised by the unions are legacy matters that predate the current administration and the leadership of NiMet under Professor Charles Anosike.
Despite this, the Director of Human Resources Management and Administration, Dr Nasiru Sani, stated that management has been engaging with the unions to address the concerns. These include the non-implementation of the new minimum wage, non-payment of arrears, and alleged non-compliance with ministerial directives.

The management described the union’s threat of industrial action as an act of sabotage and a potential threat to national security.
According to Sani, the unions had previously commended NiMet’s leadership for its labour-friendly approach, making the sudden change in stance surprising. He explained that the management has provided a point-by-point response to the union’s demands, with some issues being handled by relevant authorities and others under ongoing review and negotiation.
Earlier on Wednesday, the unions had directed staff members of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to begin a strike on 4th February 2025 if their demands were not met.
The unions—National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCCSTRSE), and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP)—alleged that the management had refused to comply with the ministerial directive to review the Conditions of Service.
