From Fred Itua, Abuja

The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof Abubakar Sulaiman, on Wednesday, inaugurated a committee to work out modalities for the 7th Convocation ceremony For postgraduate students.

NILDS offers postgraduate diploma and master’s degree programmes in the following areas Legislative Drafting, Parliamentary Administration and Legislative Studies.

These programmes are available on both full-time and part-time basis and are administered in affiliation with the University of Benin.

Speaking during the inauguration of the committee, Sulaiman said the Institute will continue to provide qualitative research on Legislative matters.

He said: “For the first time in four years, we’re preparing on time ahead of the convocation ceremony so we can get everything right on time. We’re busy with so many things. We’ve our building to commission and the radio to go on air before the end of the 9th National Assembly.

“So, the commissioning of the permanent site is becoming a reality. We’ve just three weeks to go. If we’re to commission it before May 29th, everything has to be in place.

“Convocation is the climax of an academic activity. It is something everyone looks up to. We’ve been consistent with the convocation. Enrollment has improved in our Institute for postgraduate studies. Our contents have improved.

“Though we work with politicians, we’ve resisted pressure to compromise on quality. We intend to maintain this standard going forward. We ensure that results are ready on time and students get what they want on time.

“We’ve enjoyed tremendous support from the leadership of the National Assembly. We’re hoping that the next leadership of the National Assembly will give us the same support to continue to grow the Institute.”
