Nigeria’s Olajide Omotayo and Bose Odusanya crashed out of the ongoing WTT Lagos Contender championship after suffering defeats in their respective Round of 16 matches on Thursday in Lagos.
At the Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, South Korea’s Kim Gaon and Japan’s Satsuki Odo were among the star performers who advanced to the quarter-finals with commanding victories.
Omotayo’s hopes of progressing in the Men’s Singles ended after he lost in straight sets to South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon. Jonghoon dominated the encounter 11-9, 11-3, 11-8 to seal a 3-0 victory and book his place in the last eight.
Earlier, Kim Gaon of South Korea also impressed with a comfortable win over Netherlands’ Milo de Boer. Kim claimed the match in straight sets after recording 11-9, 12-10, 11-8 and 13-11 scores to reach the quarter-finals.
In the Women’s Singles, Nigeria’s Bose Odusanya was outclassed by Japan’s Satsuki Odo, who secured a convincing 3-0 victory. Odo controlled the match from start to finish, winning 11-5, 11-2 and 11-3.
Portugal’s Jieni Shao also advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating India’s Sutirtha Mukherjee in another women’s singles clash. Shao won 11-8, 11-5 and 11-6 to complete a straight-sets victory.
Nigeria also suffered disappointment in the Men’s Doubles event as AbdulFatai Abdulbasit and Matthew Fabunmi were eliminated by India’s Thakker Manav and Manush Shah.
The Indian duo dominated the contest, winning 11-9, 11-5 and 11-5 to progress to the quarter-finals.
The WTT Lagos Contender championship has continued to attract top-ranked players from across the world, with more intense matches expected as the tournament enters the decisive stages.
