Nigeria’s Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, Ajuri Ngelale, has embarked on a series of high-level engagements with key stakeholders in the global climate action and finance ecosystem. These interactions aim to deepen collaboration on existential climate matters and drive sustainable progress.

These engagements is to demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to climate action and green economic development, underscoring the importance of collaboration with global stakeholders to address existential climate matters and drive sustainable progress.

In a post via his verified X handle @AjuriNgele, the Envoy on Climate Action, said on Tuesday, he met with the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, at the UN Headquarters in New York. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration on critical climate issues.

“I was honored to exchange views with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on Tuesday at the UN Headquarters in New York. Deepening collaboration with critical stakeholders on these existential matters is a top priority”, he said.

On Wednesday, Ngelale said he engaged in a productive discussion with Landon Derentz of the Global Energy Center of the Washington-based Atlantic Council in Washington D.C.

He said the conversation centered on green industry and carbon capture technology manufacturing and implementation in Nigeria.

“It was a pleasure to engage in a productive and incisive discussion with Mr. Landon Derentz of the Global Energy Center of the Washington-based Atlantic Council on Wednesday in Washington D.C.

“We shared views about green industry and carbon capture technology manufacturing and implementation in Nigeria moving forward. Exciting times ahead for Africa’s most populous nation”, he said.

Ngelale added that later on the same day, he was hosted by a sector-wide technical working group of the U.S. State Department at their Headquarters.

He said the discussion focused on important areas of mutual concern ahead of the United Nations Climate Conference in Bonn, Germany.

The Envoy said he presented Nigeria’s green industrial plans, participation in the Energy Transition Accelerator, Methane reduction program, Carbon Market and Management Initiatives, and updates on nationally determined contributions (NDCs) amongst other matters.

“We delved into important areas of mutual concern ahead of the United Nations Climate Conference holding in Bonn, Germany, next week. I presented Nigeria’s green industrial plans and discussed our participation in the Energy Transition Accelerator, Methane reduction programme, as well as our Carbon Market and Management Initiatives, and updates on our nationally determined contributions (NDC) amongst other important matters”, Ngelale said.

President Bola Tinubu, appointed Ngelale, as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action (SPEC), on May 19th, when he announced the establishment of 23-man presidential committee on climate action and green economic solutions, in which he chairs, while the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal is the Vice-Chairman.

The committee is expected to “coordinate and oversee all policies and programmes on climate action and green economic development”.

It is also to “identify, develop, and implement innovative non-oil & non-gas climate action initiatives”.

The committee will coordinate the activities of relevant federal government institutions towards the “attainment of all agreed climate action and green economic objectives and non-oil/non-gas ambitions”.
