UPDATED: Nigerians plunged into darkness after national grid collapse

The national grid has collapsed for the first time in 2025, plunging Nigerians into darkness and uncertainty in the new year.

Daily Sun reports that the grid collapse which took place on Saturday, January 11, was confirmed by reports, resulting in a nationwide blackout.

The development makes it the 13th time in the past 13 months, with reports revealing that power generation dropped from 2111.01 megawatts as of 2 pm to 390.20 MW by 3 pm.

Confirming the collapse in a post, The Energy podcast penned: “National grid suffers major collapse… First in 2025.”

Reacting to the blackout, Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), revealed that the collapse occurred at 1:56 pm.

It added that restoration had begun, saying: “Restoration has begun. Currently generating 302MW as of 02:40 pm.”
