Nigerian passport now 88th in global ranking, highest in 5 years

The Nigerian passport has risen in ranking from 199 to 88th place, according to the latest Henley Passport Index report on July 18, 2025.

Based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) and expert analysis on the latest shifts in passport power, the index is updated on a regular basis.

The 88th position is shared between Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Myanmar, the same nations it was grouped with earlier in 2025 when it was ranked 91st.

However, travel freedom remains restricted despite the boost in ranking, as it still means visa-free access to only 45 countries, the same as in 2024 when it ranked 92.

Nigeria was in the 90th spot in July 2023 but dropped to the 97th position, with countries like Burundi, Cameroon, and Liberia ranked higher that year.

The latest report from the Henley Passport Index indicates that Nigeria is ranked higher than six African countries—Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia.
