The Nigerian Navy has reaffirmed its dedication to professionalism, discipline, and national unity through sports during the 69th Anniversary Boat Race, held at the water front of the Navy Sailing Club in Ojo, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla who was represented by Rear Admiral Kanayochukwu Anthony Amauche (Rtd) urged athletes, coaches, and officials to remain committed to excellence in their craft.

“It is only through dedication and determination that our athletes can excel, build lasting careers in water sports, and ultimately represent Nigeria at international competitions,” he said.

The CNS commended the strides made by the Navy Sailing Club, noting significant improvements in its facilities and operations. He emphasized that the boat race was not just a celebration of maritime tradition, but a reaffirmation of the Navy’s commitment to teamwork, professionalism, and physical excellence.

“This event brings together officers, ratings, and staff in a shared display of synergy and endurance—qualities that define our identity as naval personnel,” he remarked. “Let us remember that while victory is desirable, integrity, camaraderie, and professionalism are paramount.”

Earlier, the Commodore of the Navy Sailing Club, Captain Festus Adewuyi, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Naval Staff and the leadership of the Main Organising Committee for choosing the club as the host venue for the anniversary celebration—the first time such an honor has been bestowed on the club.

“This is a proud moment for us,” he said. “We deeply appreciate the Chief of the Naval Staff for entrusting us with this responsibility and for the logistical support provided to ensure the success of this event.”

Captain Adewuyi also made a passionate appeal to Naval Headquarters for additional support to repair some of the club’s sailing boats and to construct a standard jetty. He noted that the current wooden jetty requires constant maintenance and is no longer ideal for sustained operations.

“Our club has 38 boats, including Laser, GP 14 and kayaks. We’ve managed the upkeep of these boats internally, but external support is urgently needed for optimal performance,” he stated.

The Commodore also acknowledged the unwavering support of key officers, including the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral M.G. Oamen – represented at the occasion by Rear Admiral I.C. Okpala; the Chairman of the Anniversary Main Organizing Committee, Rear Admiral A.O. Ogunleye; and officials of the Nigeria Sailing Federation, whose efforts ensured the smooth coordination of the event.

The boat race was one of the major highlights of the Nigerian Navy’s week-long 69th anniversary celebrations, bringing together naval personnel, sports enthusiasts, and invited dignitaries in a colorful celebration of service, unity, and the enduring spirit of maritime excellence.

Prizes were awarded to deserving winners at the end of the event in Single Kayak 200m men and women, GP 14, Laser, Double Kayak men and women.

Three-time Club Commodore, Citizen Giwa-Daramola in his vote of thanks urged for greater sport to the Navy Sailing Club from the Naval Headquarters to further the develop the club and for it to acquire new boats that will be in sync with modern sailing boats.
