A Nigerian man, Ayodele Jamgbadi, is facing a murder case in the United Kingdom over the death of a 61-year-old railway worker, Jorge Ortega, following an incident at Ilford Station in east London.
Jamgbadi is accused of punching Ortega in the face after allegedly becoming angry when he missed a train from Ilford to Stratford on the Elizabeth line.
The incident occurred at about 8.45pm on December 4, 2024, Inner London Crown Court heard.
Prosecutor Patrick Dennis told the court that CCTV footage showed Jamgbadi missing a train before he began kicking an advertising frame at the station.
Three railway workers, including Ortega, reportedly approached him in an attempt to calm the situation.
According to Dennis, Ortega was moving backwards when Jamgbadi allegedly punched him once in the face.
The 61-year-old railway worker fell onto the platform and hit his head, leaving him unconscious.
An ambulance was called, and Ortega was taken to hospital for treatment. However, he died from his injuries two days later, on December 6, 2024.
The court heard that Jamgbadi was arrested following the incident.
Prosecutors said he later told British Transport Police officers: “I punched him in the face, I literally punched him in the face.”
He allegedly also asked the officers: “What are you going to do about it, are you going to nick me?”
Jamgbadi, who lives on Kingston Road in Ilford, was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm. The charge was subsequently upgraded to murder following Ortega’s death.
However, Judge Benedict Kelleher told the jury that Jamgbadi is not fit to enter a plea or stand trial because he is mentally unwell and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
The jury has therefore been tasked with determining whether Jamgbadi carried out the act that resulted in Ortega’s death.
The prosecution said the case centres on the events at Ilford Station and the alleged punch that caused Ortega to fall and sustain the injuries that later proved fatal.
