A Nigerian national is being investigated over alleged links to an international drug trafficking network after Indian authorities seized narcotics valued at more than $330m from an Iranian vessel in the Arabian Sea.

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) reportedly identified the Nigerian as a suspected intermediary between a wanted Gujarat-based suspect and other members of the alleged network.

The seizure took place on September 25 during a joint operation by the Gujarat ATS and the Indian Coast Guard. Officers recovered 526kg of narcotics, comprising approximately 400kg of methamphetamine and 126kg of heroin, from the vessel, according to Indian media reports.

Investigators reportedly received intelligence that the Nigerian had been involved in a meeting in Ahmedabad connected to the suspected drug transaction. The information prompted authorities to alert the Coast Guard, which tracked down and intercepted the Iranian boat, identified in reports as Azad.

The investigation has also focused on alleged links between the trafficking operation and Pakistan-based suspected drug trafficker Haji Salim. Gujarat ATS officials said the consignment was allegedly intended for delivery in India as part of a wider smuggling arrangement.

According to investigators, the drugs were to be transferred at sea to another vessel associated with Tamil Nadu before being moved inland. Reports said Punjab was among the intended destinations, where the consignment was allegedly to be distributed.

Five Pakistani nationals found aboard the Iranian vessel were arrested during the operation. The boat, its crew and the seized drugs were subsequently taken to Mumbai for further investigation and legal proceedings.

The vessel was also reportedly equipped with a Starlink communication device, which investigators believe may have been used to communicate with handlers while at sea.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the roles of the suspected participants, trace the wider trafficking network and determine the Nigerian national’s alleged involvement.

The Nigerian has not been reported as arrested in connection with the seizure, and the allegations against him have not been established in court.
