Nigeria youth league Cup: Enyimba, Sunshine, 6 others to compete for N40m price award

Enyimba FC of Aba, Sunshine FC of Akure in addition to six other Premier league academy teams, will compete for the N40 million price award in this year’s Nigeria Youth League Cup (NYLC) scheduled for Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Robinson Adakosa, NYLC president, who made the disclosure in Abuja on Tuesday, announced that the tournament, tagged Super 8, will hold between June 23 and 30 with four matches holding daily on round robin basis.

He said that this year’s tournament has a heavy financial budget of over N1.3 billion, revealing that the beneficiaries of the N40 million price reward would be spread among the eight participating teams.

“A total of N40 million is at stake. The winner of the Super 8 will go home with a pricely N10 million. Runner-up N8 million and third placed N6 million. The fourth team on the log will take home N4 million while the fifth to eighth position will go home with N3 million each,” he said.

While unveiling the participating teams, the organisers noted: “At the end of the regular season, I am happy to announce to you that the four top teams in the Northern Conference are; Kano Pillars FC, Plateau United FC, Kwara United FC, and Mailartanki FC of Abuja.

“In the Southern Conference; we have Enyimba FC of Aba, Sunshine FC of Akure, Atlanta Business FC of Lagos and Shuttle Select FC of Lagos. Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos will host the NYLC Super 8 from June 23-30 with four matches daily on round robin basis.

“I am happy to announce that arrangements are in place to make the organisation of the Super 8 top notch. All logistics for a successful championship are in place as adequate and comprehensive security for all the participating teams and match officials are intact,” he assured.

Giving further information about the tournament, Adakosa said: “I must confess that the season has been challenging for us with several hiccups but we are undaunted in our quest to give our youths a new breath of free air and the enabling environment.

“The season despite the topsy-turvy nature has been exhilarating full of breathtaking football artistry, skills workshop, ruggedness and never-die-spirit of our players.

“In the course of the season, early this year in January to be precise, European scouts came for a scouting programmes with our All Stars players in action at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

“All the matches are going to be handled by respected match arbiters with the highest ethical standards. The match will be stream live with scouts watching all over the world. I can tell you categorically that FC Barcelona Head of recruitment, Villa Gorriz has confirmed to us that he will be on ground to be part of the experience.

We are expecting others from UK, Netherlands too,” he revealed.

In attendance include three Nigerian former internationals, comprising Tijani Babangida, Celestine Babayaro, and Fuludu Edema.
