Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has stated that Nigeria would have been a better nation if Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi had won the 2023 election.

Sharing his thoughts in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Abaribe took a jab at the present administration, faulting President Bola Tinubu for what he called nepotism.

According to the senator representing Abia South in the Senate, such favouritism would have been absent under Obi’s presidency.

“If Peter Obi had won, you probably would have seen a better Nigeria than what we are seeing today.

“Number one, he would not be as nepotistic as this government, he won’t, it’s not in him. That is just who we are, we feel for the other people,” Abaribe stated.

The senator further alleged that the nepotism that was a part of Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has only gotten worse since Tinubu took over.

“Buhari towed the path of nepotism, but it deepened under President Tinubu because Buhari did it and nobody said much except him.”

Abaribe called for a shift in focus to the people in the southeast, harping on the need for the region to prioritize self-development rather than relying on federal leadership for fairness.

He added that no other Nigerian president has treated the Southeast equitably, with the exception of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

“Let us go back to the South East and revamp it, make it more livable, better, and more cohesive, and hold ourselves together.”
