Nigeria rounds off Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship with 29 medals

Nigeria Weightlifting team to the 2026 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship on Saturday rounded off their participation winning five additional medals.

The contingent of 10 athletes and three officials stamped Nigeria’s dominance in the continent winning a record 29 medals overall – 14 gold, 13 silver and 2 bronze

Mary Osijo who competed in the 79kg women’s category on Friday won three silver medals while Lucky Joseph who competed in +110kg men’s class on Saturday won two bronze medals.

Osijo lifted 95kg in snatch, and 116kg in clean and jerk with a total of 280kg to win all the three medals at stake.

On his part, Lucky Joseph lifted 145kg in snatch, 170kg in clean and jerk with a total of 315kg to win two bronze medals.

Nigeria female lifters emerged 3rd in the continent after winning 12 gold and 6 silver medals.

The 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships. Ismaila, Egypt which started on May 10th will end today, May 17th May, 2026.

Nigeria’s contingent is expected to return to the country today.
