The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed its readiness to support the effective implementation of state policing, should it be adopted, while ensuring that the process is guided by the highest standards of professionalism, accountability and operational excellence in the interest of national security.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, gave the assurance yesterday while declaring open a one-day sensitisation workshop on state policing organised by the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies (NIPS) in Abuja. According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Anietie Iniedo, the IGP described the workshop as a strategic platform aimed at equipping police officers with the requisite knowledge to engage constructively in the ongoing national discourse on state policing and contribute meaningfully to the implementation of future policing reforms.
Disu stressed that the evolving conversation on state policing requires informed participation by officers, noting that the workshop would deepen their understanding of the proposed framework and prepare them for any reforms that may emerge.
In his welcome address, the Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies, Olu Ogunshakin, commended the Inspector-General for establishing the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee on State Police. According to him, the committee has made significant contributions to the ongoing policing reform process, with several of its recommendations already reflected in the proposed State Police Bill.

He described the committee’s work as a major milestone in efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s policing architecture and align it with emerging security realities.
The IG urged participants to maximise the opportunity provided by the workshop by actively participating in discussions, exchanging ideas and sharing the knowledge acquired with officers in their respective commands and formations.
He said such engagements would help promote a common understanding of the proposed reform across the Force and ensure that officers are adequately prepared for any future changes to the country’s policing structure.
The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to build institutional capacity and prepare its personnel for possible reforms aimed at enhancing public safety, improving service delivery and strengthening national security.
