From Uchenna Inya, Abakaliki
Former Board of Trustee member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the country, Chief Austin Edeze has said that Nigeria was not turning to a one party state.
Edeze said contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the nation remains a multiparty state.
Addressing journalists in his Abakaliki residence at the weekend during a ceremony organised by his Ndieze community, Izzi Local Government Area of the state to welcome him into the APC, Edeze opined that there were some other political parties in the country, including the African Democratic Party (ADC), the PDP, Labour Party (LP), Accord Party (AP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) among others apart from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said the political parties were also doing their congresses and conventions preparatory to the 2027 general election.
He said the internal squabbles some of the political parties were facing, was part of party politics.
“It is not true that the country is turning to one party state. I don’t even think that the country is running a one-party system because there are still other political parties in the country. We have LP, ADC, Accord Party, APGA and other political parties.

“These parties are also doing their conventions and hoping to produce a presidential candidate,” he said
He predicted that APC would win Ebonyi State convincingly in the next year’s general election
“With these kinds of moves we are making, coupled with this kind of meeting and ceremony you are witnessing today, it means that the 2027 election for the governor of the state is going to be a very smooth and peaceful election that will lead us to victory.
“I don’t see why the APC will not complete its eight years. So, for anybody that is contesting against the present Governor, I think the person is not just contesting against the APC, he’s also contesting against the Izzi clan and the entire state.
“You see, it’s not going to be a sweep-it-all election. For instance, in this state, anyhow you want to look at it, APC will still win. Anyhow you want to look at it, APC will win Ebonyi State.
“Even if the APC does not win in Abia and Enugu, it will win in this state. In some states, even the Accord Party will win. So, it is not like everybody is joining APC and then the country is already a one-party system, no, it is not like that.
“There are still a lot of people who are in different parties. The squabbles, the problems you have in some of the political parties, internal and external, are what we experience in party politics,” he stated.
