Nigeria played a pivotal role in TikTok’s global success this year as Nigerian creators and entrepreneurs harnessed the platform’s power to ‘captivate audiences’ worldwide, the company has said.

The Head of Content Operations, Sub-Saharan Africa at TikTok, Boniswa Sidwaba, said in a statement that in 2024, the social media platform continued to reshape the digital landscape and from trending dances to viral challenges, Nigerian content has become a global phenomenon.

“TikTok is a catalyst for economic growth, cultural trends, and social impact. We celebrate our Nigerian and wider West African community who have inspired and entertained us this year,” Sidwaba said.

Sidwaba said Nigeria emerged as a powerhouse on TikTok, with local creators captivating global audiences. The platform provided a stage for small businesses to flourish, transforming creativity into tangible economic gains. From viral dance challenges to thought-provoking discussions, Nigerian content dominated the platform, showcasing the country’s vibrant culture and diverse perspectives.

The company said TikTok also redefined the way people experience sports as the platform became a hub for sports enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of professional and grassroots content. Citing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as an example with over 393,000 TikTok videos celebrating the tournament, Sidwaba said TikTok brought the excitement of AFCON to a global audience.

“As we look ahead to 2025, TikTok remains committed to fostering creativity, inclusivity, and positive impact. The possibilities are endless, and the platform’s influence on culture and commerce is only set to grow,” Sidwaba said.
