South Africa held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Bloemfontein, putting the Super Eagles on the verge of losing out on the 2026 World Cup.

South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, with Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong’s own goal.

Nigeria’s equaliser came in the 44th minute, through Calvin Bassey, who pounced on a loose ball inside the box to fire home and restore parity.

The goal sparked renewed confidence in the Nigerian camp, and both teams battled fiercely in the closing stages to find a winner.

The result sees Nigeria remain firmly in contention in Group C as the CAF World Cup qualifying campaign heats up.

With only the group winner guaranteed a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada, every point gained is crucial.

Nigeria will now turn its focus to the next round of qualifiers, where victory will be essential to strengthen its position in the group standings.
