Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has said Nigeria deserves a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, citing the country’s long-standing contributions to global peace efforts and diplomacy.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, Ibrahim noted that Nigeria’s influence at the United Nations is visible even within its headquarters, pointing to artefacts donated by traditional rulers such as the Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi and Sa’ad Abubakar, which he said are prominently displayed.

According to him, Nigeria’s role in international peacekeeping and diplomacy across Africa and beyond justifies the country’s push for stronger representation within the global body’s top decision-making organ.

He added that apart from Nelson Mandela of South Africa, few African figures are as prominently represented at the UN headquarters.

Ibrahim stressed that Nigeria can achieve much more within the UN framework and should intensify efforts toward securing a permanent seat on the Security Council, arguing that the country’s contributions to international stability cannot be overemphasised.
