Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has cautioned politicians and other stakeholders against using ethnic, religious and sectional sentiments to divide the people of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mohammed gave the warning in his Independence Day goodwill message to the people of Bauchi State on Thursday, as Nigeria marked its 66th independence anniversary.

The governor particularly appealed to youths not to allow themselves to be used for political thuggery, violence or activities capable of disrupting public peace during the electioneering period.

He said democracy should thrive on the “marketplace of ideas, not on conflict,” urging political actors to conduct their campaigns with decorum, maturity and mutual respect.

“Let us protect the peace and stability we have collectively built in Bauchi State, remembering that political parties and ambitions will come and go, but our state remains ours to preserve,” he said.

Mohammed said the approaching 2027 general elections had made it necessary to caution citizens, political actors and other stakeholders to avoid actions that could threaten the peace and unity of the state.

He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, youth and women organisations, civil society groups and other stakeholders to continue supporting peace-building and constructive engagement in their communities.

The governor also acknowledged the economic pressures confronting individuals, families and communities, particularly the high cost of living, but said the situation should not diminish the people’s hope and confidence in the future.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Bauchi for their patience, resilience, support, prayers and constructive criticisms during his administration.

Mohammed disclosed that Thursday’s independence anniversary would be the final one he would commemorate with the people of Bauchi in his present capacity as governor.

“For me personally, this occasion carries an additional significance, as it is the final independence anniversary I will commemorate with you in my present capacity as the governor of our dear state,” he said.

He described public office as a temporary and sacred trust, saying what would endure were the institutions strengthened, opportunities created, lives touched and foundations laid for future generations.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, water supply, economic empowerment, urban and rural development, youth and women empowerment, institutional reform, digital transformation, and improved public service delivery.

He called on the people to renew their commitment to peace, unity, justice, progress, and shared prosperity, while urging them to continue working collectively for the development of Bauchi State and Nigeria.

Mohammed concluded by congratulating the people of Bauchi State and Nigerians on the 66th independence anniversary and prayed for continued peace, stability, and development in the state and the country.
