From Ola Muhammad, Birnin Kebbi
The former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Chika Malami, SAN, and gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has said Nigeria’s 66th independence ought to have marked total liberation from poverty, insecurity and injustice.
Malami stated this in his anniversary message made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi through the Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Campaign Council, Mr Bello Abdullahi.
According to him: “I warmly congratulate all Nigerians, especially the good people of Kebbi State, on the occasion of our 66th Independence Anniversary.
“Today, we honour the courage and sacrifices of the generation that secured our political independence. But our journey as a nation reminds us that true independence must also mean freedom from poverty, insecurity, unemployment, injustice and poor governance.
“Government has a sacred responsibility to protect lives and property, uphold the rule of law, manage public resources responsibly, create opportunities and provide the conditions for every citizen to live with dignity.
“Citizens, too, have responsibilities. We must obey the law, protect public property, reject violence and corruption, participate responsibly in democracy and hold those entrusted with public office accountable.”
Malami said that, as citizens celebrate 66 years of nationhood, we must renew our determination to move from political independence to genuine economic, social and democratic freedom.
He said: “This is the Nigeria and the Kebbi we must build together, a society where institutions work, public resources serve the public good, and every citizen has a fair opportunity to prosper.
“As the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State, I believe our politics must ultimately be about the liberation of our people from the conditions that hold them back and the restoration of hope, dignity, accountability and opportunity.”
While wishing the people of Kebbi a happy 66 years of nationhood, Malami insisted that the journey continues and that together, they can build a better Kebbi and a stronger Nigeria.
