Nigeria at 66: Labour Party expresses hope despite challenges

As Nigeria marks its 66th year of independence, the leadership of the Labour Party has reaffirmed its faith in the Nigerian people and the nation’s ability to overcome current challenges and fulfil its enormous potential.

The party, in a goodwill message signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Ken Asogwa, acknowledges the many missed opportunities and unfulfilled expectations over the decades. The statement reads: “Nigeria’s continued existence as one indivisible nation, despite the numerous challenges confronting it over the past 66 years, speaks volumes to our collective resolve and our understanding that our strength lies in our unity and diversity.”

It further highlighted that while Nigerians are today burdened by a myriad of economic and security challenges, some of which are the consequences of successive years of ineffective leadership and governance, they will continue to strive and hope for a better future.

“There will surely be joy in the morning. It would be a double tragedy for a people who have endured years of misrule to surrender hope for their country now. We must remember that meaningful change will only come when we, as citizens, rise to hold our leaders accountable, an obligation that cannot be fulfilled through resignation or despair.

“It is against this background that the Labour Party urges Nigerians to look in the direction of the party for exemplary leadership. The party has fielded very competent and credible Nigerians for the coming general elections, beginning from the presidential to the state assembly positions, and enjoins our suffering citizens to look in the direction of the party for salvation and succour.

“Given the demonstrated credible leadership taking place in Abia State, where Governor Alex Otti, a product of the Labour Party, holds sway, the party is bold to say that it is a party that has been tested and has proven its fidelity to its promises to the Nigerian people. Governor Otti, our pride and a role model in true leadership, has given every Nigerian yearning for change a reason to trust in the candidates of the Labour Party in the coming polls.”

The party therefore calls on all those in positions of authority to follow in the footsteps of the Labour Party and govern with empathy, justice and transparency, bearing in mind that no nation has ever achieved true development without deliberately prioritising the welfare and wellbeing of its citizens.
