Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has pardoned nine inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state and commuted the death sentence of another inmate to life imprisonment as Nigeria marks its 66th independence anniversary.
The gesture, which takes immediate effect, was approved by the governor in commemoration of the 2026 Independence Day and on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.
Among those pardoned are Abubakar Dajo, serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso at the Numan Custodial Centre; and Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who were held in various custodial centres across the state.
Fintiri also approved the commutation of the death sentence imposed on Saidu Abdullahi of the Yola Old Custodial Centre to life imprisonment.
The governor exercised the prerogative under Section 212(1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, with all legal formalities reportedly concluded by the Nigerian Correctional Service.
In his Independence Day message, Fintiri felicitated Nigerians, particularly the people of Adamawa State, describing the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey and renew faith in its future.
He paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers, including Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Sir Ahmadu Bello, saying their sacrifices and vision for a united and prosperous nation remained relevant to present and future generations.

The governor also commended the military and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting the country amid prevailing security challenges.
Fintiri acknowledged the economic and social difficulties confronting Nigerians, but said the resilience and enterprise of the people continued to sustain the nation.
On Adamawa State, the governor thanked residents for their support and cooperation with his administration, saying their partnership had enabled his government to deliver development projects across sectors and position the state as a destination for business, conferences and investment.
He further assured the people that no ongoing project initiated by his administration would be abandoned, pledging to complete existing projects and deliver sustainable infrastructure.
Fintiri expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its present challenges through renewed commitment, unity and collective effort.
He wished Nigerians, particularly the people of Adamawa State, a peaceful and happy 66th independence anniversary.
