Scholar urges Nigerians to emulate former governor’s job-creation legacy
Former Governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom, has said that Nigeria is a great country with diverse economic resources.
Ortom stated this when a Delta-born academic scholar, lecturer, business development consultant and efficiency expert, Dr Obinna Francis Okwechime, presented a book to him at his country home in Makurdi.
Okwechime urged Nigerians, particularly political and business leaders, to emulate the leadership virtues of the former governor by investing in people through job creation, skills development and enterprise development.
He revealed that the book, “Small Business, Big Impact”, which he presented to Ortom, would make a significant impact on the Nigerian economy.
According to him, Ortom’s commitment to employment creation predates his tenure as governor of Benue State. He explained that, even before assuming public office, the former governor had distinguished himself as an entrepreneur through Oracle Business Limited, where he established successful publishing and packaged-water production enterprises that created employment opportunities and promoted skills development.

Describing Ortom as the highest private-sector employer in Benue State, Okwechime commended his sustained commitment to creating employment opportunities, developing technical capabilities and expanding economic opportunities for the people.
He noted that, at a time when many leaders channelled investments outside their communities, Ortom demonstrated that investing in people, local enterprises and productive capacity remains one of the most sustainable pathways to economic development.
According to the scholar, productive employment is a catalyst for unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential, stressing that empowering small businesses and entrepreneurs is critical to driving inclusive growth, reducing poverty and building a resilient economy.
He described Ortom’s approach as “a model of leadership worthy of emulation,” adding that Nigeria’s economic transformation would be accelerated if more leaders prioritise investments that create jobs, build local capacity and strengthen indigenous enterprises.
